Because I don't really follow anyone's rules, I'm going to proudly and unapologetically post a couple of blogposts that have been on my calendar for the past couple of months...YIKES!
Okay, We all know that I'm a sorority girl and you've either heard, read or have first hand knowledge of my involvement in the illustrious sisterhood known as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. So I would like to dedicate my long overdue Women's History Month post to the women who I entered this sisterhood with, my line sisters of 6 D.I.A.M.O.N.D.S.
March 22, marked our 20th AKAversary in the sisterhood and we were so blessed to be able to celebrate this milestone with 100% attendance during our regional conference in Chicago, March 3-6. When I say these ladies showed out, I mean they had me in tears. We've always been an extra line, so for us to have the POM & CIRCUMSTANCE is just par for the course when dealing with these girls. We had a wonderful time bonding with stories, laughter, memories and very special commemorative gifts. We even celebrated a 40th birthday with one of our sands. We were showered with love from our big sisters, little sisters and Soror friends.
So yes....we had a fantastic time, which honestly wasn't surprising because we've always had fun together. Our big sister always said that we were a very easy, chill line with no drama (well we do have a DRAMA #1)! When the DIAMONDS are in the house, it's always a TURN UP!
Now, I want to tell you what did surprise me......and that was the love that we have for each other! It was wonderful to see 20 years later, we are still the same, just a more fierce, experienced version of ourselves. Similar to you not being able to pick your family members, you don't get to pick the young ladies who will enter the Sorority with you. Since the last of our line graduated in 1999, there have been maybe 3-5 times that we were ALL together and every single time our bond just amazes me! It seems like there are NEW bonds formed between Sands & OLD bonds get even tighter. It makes me laugh how well we know each other. We understand our sensitivities and respect that! We get mad at each other and for a group of girls who are ALL BOSSES, that can be A VERY SERIOUS MATTER! And we all have families, careers and pretty hectic lives so NO we don't talk ALL the time but when it's time, the D.I.A.M.O.N.D.S. get in FORMATION!!!!! We were brought in understanding that our sisterhood is not Kool-Aid. It is not add Kyna and stir. It is something that we have to work at and I can honestly say that we have done just that!
So to my sands (Re Re, Joyce, Neicy, Oni and Eb), NO, I didnt forget to give us a shout out on our actual AKAversary (even though we celebrated early), I just had to find the time to put my thoughts into words, to once again express how much you mean the world to me!
I LOVE Y'ALL and even Lil Malcolm!!!!!!!
